Full Cream, Toned or Standardized? Choosing the Right Milk

·

Milk

Walk into any dairy aisle in India and you will see several kinds of milk. The main difference between them is how much milk fat and SNF (solids-not-fat, such as protein, lactose and minerals) they contain.

What the labels mean

Food standards in India set minimum levels for each type of packaged milk. As a general guide, full cream milk has the most fat, standardized milk sits in the middle, and toned milk has less fat. Double toned and skimmed milk have even less. Always check the exact values printed on the pack you buy.

  • Full cream milk — richest and creamiest; great for chai, kheer and sweets.
  • Standardized milk — a balanced middle option for tea and setting curd.
  • Toned milk — lighter everyday milk for drinking and cooking.

Which one should you choose?

Think about how you use milk most. If your family loves thick chai and home-made sweets, full cream milk is a natural fit. For a lighter daily glass, toned milk is popular. If you have specific dietary needs, ask your doctor or a qualified nutritionist.
